Google Doodle marks the Lunar New Year on this day. This day is the first day of the first month of the lunar calendar (Lunar New Year). It is one of the major holidays in most of Asia around the world. It has another name Spring Festival or Chinese New Year. Each year, a specific animal marks the transition of the year. The animal of the year is from Dog to Pig. During the last year shēngxiào, or Chinese zodiac was the representative. In the Asian Culture, Pigs are a sign of prosperity. Pigs are very sincere, good-natured and honest.

The doodle of Google today, celebrates the tradition of shadow puppetry. Shadow puppetry will always have a special place in the festivities. This year, people will celebrate Lunar New Year along with the ancient storytelling art of shadow puppetry with Shadow Art. All the users from one of the twelve zodiac animal hand gestures in front of their camera and the AI system, built with Tensor flow, will play a short clip matching the shadow puppet that’s been made. Lunar New Year – Preparations and Celebrations:

Another name for Chinese New Year is The First Day of the Great Year. The people clean their home to wipe out the last years’ bad luck. They decorate they home with all they can. All this will take place well in advance of the new moon. Another interesting fact is that cleaning stops as the New Lunar Year arrives. All fear that they may wipe out new year’s good luck. All have a great purchase of dress and shoes for a brand new start. The red color is very special because they think it is a symbol of luck. There is a belief that the red color will drive off bad luck and beasts.

All the people of the family gather and to share special meals and exchange gifts. Elders will give small children money which they consider it to fill them with luck and blessings. This Lucky money is on a red cover. In entire China, the whole holiday season has a name which is chunjie. This festival will last for more than two weeks and celebrations differ greatly across regions. Fireworks are used in these celebrations as they feel loud noise scares monsters and bad luck away. Hong Kong celebrates the Lunar New Year in a grand manner. A combination of the ancient culture of modern excitement’s presence is fully there. Night custom is the major source of attraction. Floats, dragons, dancers, and musicians fill the streets. In Taiwan, family and friends are the focus. There are really big events arranged. Mostly, in Taiwan people visit temples and other places and spend time with their family.

The festival date changes every year. This is because it follows the lunar calendar, based on the movement of the moon. Usually, it falls on a day between mid-January and mid-February. In 2019, Chinese New Year falls on February 5. The celebration lasts for 15 days till Lantern Festival. The peak time of the entire celebration is on Chinese New Year’s Eve and the first day of the lunar new year. The 15th day is called Lantern Festival, marking the end of the celebration.

One-sixth of the world’s people celebrate it. It is not only celebrated in Mainland China but also observed in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Vietnam, Singapore, and some other Asian countries as well as Chinatowns around the world. In recent years, the celebrations in New York, London, Vancouver, Sydney, and other overseas cities have spread out of Chinatowns. Most employees have 7-12 days off the work, and students have one-month winter vacation. The 2019 Chinese New Year holiday is from February 4th to 10th. No matter where they are, people try their best to return home for a family reunion, like westerners attempting to spend Christmas with their families. Meanwhile, some families travel together during the holiday. This makes the world’s largest annual migration, known as the Spring Festival Travel Rush. 
The reunion dinner on Chinese New Year’s Eve is a big feast of the past year. This is the most important time to be with families. After the reunion dinner, families sit together to watch the CCTV New Year’s Gala while chatting. As the most watched TV program, the gala collects various well-selected performances, targeting audiences of different generations. Finally, a bit weird yet a fact, which is on Chinese New Year everyone is a year older. It doesn’t matter when you were born; this is like a national birthday.
